Trekking in Morocco: Jebel Sirwa is a volcano that links the Anti-Atlas to the High AtlasThis is an 8 day trekking tour in a volcanic region of Morocco. The scenery is beautiful and you can see saffron being grown.
Jebel Sirwa lies north-east of Taliouine in the Toubkal National Park. Its peak is the highest point of the Anti-Atlas, coming in at a gigantic 3305 metres above sea level (ASL).
The volcanic formations are impressive, and the journey to get there has scenery that is incredibly diverse, ranging from mountain gorges and terraced fields to green plains and ancient Berber villages. Saffron is grown here and the Ait Ouaouzguite region is also well known for its beautiful carpets and rugs.
ITINERARY
You’ll arrive at Marrakech airport and be transported to your hotel or riad in Marrakech.
We’ll start our trek by driving across the southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains. We will arrive in Tamalakout (1650 m ASL) where we’ll meet our mules and their Berber muleteers and take a short stroll around the village in the late afternoon. This is where we’ll stay for the night.
We will trek for 6 hours, following the river from Tanzaline to Assaka (2000 m ASL).
We will hike thorugh many Berber villages, starting at Ait Taigga, heading through Idougagh and finally to Ait Ighmour where we will make our camp for the night.
Today we will climb Mount Sirwa to a height of 3305 metres above sea level. When we have reached the peak and taken in the stunning scenery, we will trek down to Iriri Azib (2300 m ASL) and make camp for the night.
We will be hiking for around 7 hours with our mules and their muleteers.
This part of the trekking tour will take us along Amzdour Tower, surrounded by meadows and Berber sheep and through to Azib Azazougzan where we can enjoy stunning views from the highlands of the volcanic rock formations.
After 5 hours of trekking, in Azib Aziwan, we can make our camp for the night.
Today we trek down to the Amassin Groves and visit Amassin’s Old Town before we pack up our things and get ready for the drive back to the city of Marrakech.
On our way, we should find time to visit the remarkable central square of Djema el-Fna, before we head back to our hotels or riad.
